Thor: Ragnarok is a 2017 American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics character Thor, produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. It is the sequel to 2011's Thor and 2013's Thor: The Dark World and the seventeenth film of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The film is directed by Taika Waititi with a screenplay by Eric Pearson and the writing team of Craig Kyle and Christopher Yost, and stars Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Cate Blanchett, Idris Elba, Jeff Goldblum, Tessa Thompson, Karl Urban, Mark Ruffalo, and Anthony Hopkins. In Thor: Ragnarok, Thor must defeat the Hulk in a gladiatorial duel in time to save Asgard from Hela and the coming Ragnarök.

A third Thor film was confirmed in January 2014, with the title and involvement of Hemsworth and Hiddleston announced that October. Waititi joined the film as director the next October, after Alan Taylor chose not to return from the second film, and Ruffalo joined the cast, crossing over the character Hulk from other MCU films. With the Hulk's inclusion, elements from the 2006 comic storyline "Planet Hulk" were adapted for Ragnarok. The rest of the cast was confirmed the next May, with Pearson revealed to be involved with the film at the start of filming in July 2016. Principal photography took place from July to October 2016, in Queensland and Sydney, Australia, with the film having exclusive use of Village Roadshow Studios in Oxenford.

Thor: Ragnarok premiered in Los Angeles on October 10, 2017, and is scheduled to be released in the United States on November 3, 2017, in 3D, IMAX and IMAX 3D.

Two years after the Battle of Sokovia,[N 1] Thor allows himself to be captured by the fire demon Surtur in order to learn more about the Infinity Stones. Surtur, however, refuses to divulge any information, instead taunting the God of Thunder with the knowledge that Ragnarök is approaching.

After breaking free from his restraints and returning to Asgard with Surtur's crown, Thor forces Loki, who has been disguised as Odin since the Dark Elf Conflict[N 2], to reveal his deception and take him to his father, who has been living on Earth. Loki directs Thor to Doctor Strange, who agrees to help them on the condition they leave Earth after Odin is found. Locating Odin in Norway, Loki and Thor reunite with the exiled King only to learn he is nearing death. Before he dies, Odin warns his sons that his death will allow their older sister Hela to break free from her prison. Moments after he passes away, Odin's warning comes true, with Hela appearing before the brothers and destroying Thor's hammer before forcing them out of the Bifrost when they attempt to escape.

Hela then invades Asgard, killing the Warriors Three and destroying the Einherjar, which she later revives to use as her own army, before recruiting the warrior Skurge to her side and dubbing him her chief executioner. At the same time, Heimdall steals the sword powering the Bifrost and organizes a resistance to fight Hela, who sends the Einherjar to retrieve the sword.

In the meantime, Thor is deposited on an alien planet, Sakaar, covered in junk. There are portals from other places all over the sky, where junk and debris from other worlds fall through to the surface. A woman manages to attach a small disk onto Thor and this allows her to render him unconscious. With the disc connected to his neck preventing him from escaping, the woman takes him to the Grandmaster who intends to use him as a gladiator in the games that keep him in power. However, due to the unusual relativistic effects of how they got there, Loki has been there for weeks, earning the Grandmaster's favour. The Grandmaster pays the woman for Thor and tells him that he can have his freedom if he defeats the arena's champion.

Thor is thrown into the gladiator's quarters where he meets Korg, an exiled Kronan resistance fighter, and his friend Miek. Korg says nobody has ever escaped or beaten the arena champion. After prepping for the fight, Thor encounters the woman who captured him there, whom he recognises as an Asgardian, named Valkyrie. When she is unsympathetic to the plight of her home he calls her a coward before being forced to go out and fight.

The champion is revealed to be the Hulk. Thor tries to talk to him but makes the mistake of calling him 'Banner'. Hulk overpowers him and is close to killing him but Thor sees a vision of his father, which causes his powers to surge. Thor is near winning against the Hulk, but the Grandmaster fixes the fight by activating the disc on Thor's neck, rendering Thor unconscious again.

Thor awakens in luxurious quarters with Hulk. Hulk doesn't want to go back to Earth because he believes he is hated there and refuses to leave. He is shown to be friends and sparring partners with Valkyrie but agrees to trick her into coming to his quarters so Thor can steal her control device and remove the disc from his neck. Thor tries to get to the Quinjet that brought Hulk to Sakaar but Hulk damages it, not wanting to leave. It is only when Thor accidentally activates a recording of Natasha's attempts to get Hulk to turn the Quinjet around that Hulk is pacified and transforms back to Banner. Banner has been in Hulk form since Sokovia, the Hulk had completely taken over and Banner was powerless and doesn't remember anything that happened for the two years since. He fears that if he becomes the Hulk again Banner will be gone forever.

The Grandmaster orders Valkyrie and Loki to track Thor and Banner down. Valkyrie finds them but the duo convince her to help them, having seen a vision of herself and her sisters falling at Hela's hands millennia ago when she was the only survivor. Loki, not wanting to be stuck on Sakaar, tells Thor he has the Grandmaster's security codes and control over his systems. Thor and company break Korg and Miek out so they can begin a slave revolt as a distraction so as to steal the Grandmaster's personal ship in order to escape from Sakaar.

Loki, inevitably, betrays the group as they are escaping but Thor has quietly placed one of the discs on his back, leaving him unconscious on the floor while Thor and company leaves. However, Korg arrives with a group of slaves and find Loki, he then turns off the device. Loki takes leadership of the group and steals a large ship with them.

Thor, Valkyrie and Banner arrive on Asgard. Hela begins an assault on the fortress where Heimdall is hiding the Asgardian civilians but Thor intervenes and engages on one on one combat with her. Banner and Valkyrie fight to help the civilians escape via the Bifrost but they are cut off from behind by the undead army and in front by the enormous Fenris (Hela's pet). Banner transforms into the Hulk to fight the Fenris as Loki arrives with Korg and the Sakaaran slaves.

Thor is overpowered by Hela who strikes him across the face, cutting out his eye. Thor has a vision of his father, who tells him that Mjolnir was only ever a focus for Thor's powers and they are greater than Odin's. With his powers in full force, Thor beats back Hela and carves through her army but he realises she is still too powerful for him. He and Loki agree that as long as Asgard exists Hela will grow more powerful. The prophecy says Ragnarok must happen, Asgard must fall and it is their place to ensure it, not stop it. Thor and Valkyire hold Hela off while Loki retrieves Surtur's crown. He places it in the fires of Asgard and Surtur is reborn.

The now much more powerful Surtur begins laying waste to Asgard and even Hela can't stop him. Hela then attempts to stop the ship carrying the Asgardian refugees and the Sakaaran slaves from leaving but Skurge, who has sneaked aboard in disguise, turns on her and fights off her remaining soldiers before she kills him before returning to fight Surtur. Hulk carries Thor and Valkyrie aboard the ship, which escapes as Asgard is utterly destroyed. Thor, now wearing an eye patch, is crowned King and decides that they should rebuild Asgard on Earth.

In a post-credits scene, Loki and Thor are discussing whether the former will be welcome on Earth when a larger spaceship appears behind theirs. In a second post-credits scene, the Grandmaster attempts to placate his angry former slaves by calling the revolt a draw.

Thor: Ragnarok is the third film in the God of Thunder’s franchise, the fifth film in Marvel Phase Three, and the 17th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. So even though it’s something of a stand-alone story, you could probably still use a refresher on everything that’s happened in the MCU that leads into the movie—and the mythological event that spells not just the end of Asgard, but all the nine realms.
There are no spoilers for Thor: Ragnarok here beyond the information officially released about the movie, but this is pretty comprehensive. So if you don’t want to know these details, or are still behind on some other Marvel movies.

Thor

The last time we saw Thor was in 2015's Avengers: Age of Ultron. Thanks to the Scarlet Witch, he had a vision of universal destruction, which he later believed would be a result of the Infinity Stones. Thor realized that four of these immensely powerful stones had recently made themselves known and he thought someone—or something—was behind their emergence. He departed Earth at the end of Ultron to find out who or what that was, but we do know in Ragnarok he’s on Earth again, seeking his father. (More on that below.)

Loki

Loki last appeared in 2013's Thor: The Dark World, so it’s been a while since we’ve seen the God of Mischief. At that time, he had been stopped from trying to take over our world (in The Avengers) and sent back to Asgard, and ended up teaming up with his half-brother Thor to defeat Malekith and his Dark Elf armies. Although it seemed like he might have turned over a new leaf in helping stop Malekith, and even seemingly died in the process, Loki is forever a trickster. The Dark World ended with him slinking away in secret to let everyone think he was still dead, while he removed Odin from power and assumed his stepfather’s identity, so he could finally rule over Asgard as he’d always desired.

Odin

Odin, the father of Thor and Loki, is the ruler of Asgard. Well, he was, before Loki spirited him away and took on his form to rule in his place. Ragnarok has revealed that somehow Odin ended up being dumped on Earth, but he’s been missing since then—and Thor, realizing what his brother had done, travels to New York City with Loki in tow to figure out just where Odin’s gone.

Doctor Strange

...and they need a bit of help to do so. Doctor Strange’s post-credits scene established that one of Stephen’s first tasks upon getting himself settled in the Sanctum Sanctorum was meeting with Thor for a chat (and a magically-acquired beer). We also know from that scene that Strange is rather miffed at the thought of Asgardians being on Earth, so he’s probably not in the movie for long—because as he tells Thor, he wants to find Odin for him and then get them (especially Loki) off-planet as soon as possible.

Hulk

Hulk, everyone’s favorite nerdy scientist-turned-unstoppable green rage monster, was also last seen in Avengers: Age of Ultron. After helping his fellow Avengers win the day, Hulk got in one of S.H.I.E.L.D’s Quinjets and left by himself. He didn’t want to hurt everyone—especially Black Widow, because Bruce Banner had begun to develop a connection with her. He even ignored her pleas to come home. We saw his jet fly off; later Nick Fury said the jet may have splashed down near Fiji.

Thanks to Ragnarok’s trailers, we know the ship somehow made its way to the alien planet Sakaar, where Hulk ends up fighting as a gladiator in the arena of Jeff Goldblum’s mysterious (and wacky) character, the Grandmaster.
